Dissolve Painting
Dissolve blend mode painting technique, shown in Photoshop User, May 2019 issue. I developed this method after experimenting with simulating classic airbrush techniques, including fast, simple masking. My starting point and inspiration was old 40s-60s graphic illustration looks you can find in Disney films and concept art from the era, especially Eyvind Earle and Mary Blair. Looking backward in time is a great way to find inspiration. For this month’s article, I went looking for some classic illustration styles to see how I might accomplish something similar in Photoshop. My search took me through my own childhood and my addiction to Disney cartoons and films, then to the concept art that drove the iconic look of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
What classic pre-digital looks or techniques do you enjoy? Have you tried recreating them in pixels?
